HRH The Duke of Calabria at the funeral of HRH George Bagration, Head of the Royal House of Georgia
 
 

HRH the Infante don Carlos, Duke of Calabria, represented HM King Juan Carlos I at the funeral of HRH Prince George Bagration, head of the royal House of Georgia in the Orthodox Cathedral of the Trinity.

Prince George Bagration of Mukhrani was born in Rome in 1944 to Prince Irakli Bagration-Mukhraneli, a descendant of the Mukhrani branch of the Bagrationi royal family of Georgia and Maria Antonietta née Pasquini dei Conti di Costafiorita.

Prince George was a keen motor sport enthusiast, participating in numerous races, mostly in Spain, and has retured from the active racing in 1982.

For most of his life he lived in Spain, where he was known as Jorge de Bagration y de Mukhrani. He returned to Georgia for the first time in 1995 to scatter the ashes of his grandfather. He finally moved to Tbilisi permanently from Spain in 2006.

He died in Tbilisi on January 16, 2008 and was interred at the Svetitskhoveli Orthodox Cathedral in Mtskheta, Georgia, on January 20, 2008. He is survived by his wife Doña Nuria née Llopis i Oliart and their son, Prince Gurami Ugo, and by a daughter Princess Doña María Antonietta and two sons, Prince Irakli and Prince David, from his first marriage to María de las Mercedes de Zornoza.
